RESULTS: Stafford Cup 1st Round (17th April)

The most anticipated first round tie of this year’s Stafford Cup competition took place at the Meadows tonight, as Dornoch City and Golspie Stafford squared off in the first East Sutherland derby of the season.

Dornoch City 3 Golspie Stafford 6

A wonderstrike from Robbie Allan (pictured) couldn’t prevent Golspie from advancing to the Quarter Final.

It proved to be goals galore in a closely fought encounter before a late capitulation from the home side resulted in a win for the visitors. Following a spell of pressure, Golspie Stafford took the lead in 16 minutes when Shaun Urquhart broke clear to fire past Kyle Eaglesfield from 12 yards. Their lead lasted just twelve minutes before a moment of class from Robbie Allan drew Dornoch level. Collecting the ball on the right, the midfield man made no mistake with a curled shot from 20 yards which found the top corner. Within three minutes City had gone 2-1 up, the goal coming through Lee Mackenzie who volleyed into the far corner of the net from the edge of the box with a shot that gave Golspie stopper Conner Ross no chance. A good passage of play at the other end saw Golspie equalise ten minutes before the break when James Macrae found space on the left to cross into the box for an unmarked Robbie Murray, who had the easy task of nodding past Eaglesfield from 6 yards out.

It remained honours even until soon after the hour when Golspie took the lead again through Eoghann Davie. In keeping with the theme of the night, Dornoch hit straight back when Adam Allan scored with a well placed shot from 20 yards to make it 3-3. The parity ended there though as Dornoch began to fall away, and Robbie Murray scored his second of the game to restore the goal advantage for Golspie. There was to be no more comebacks and in the final minutes of the game, Golspie killed the game off. It was left to Eoghann Davie to take the plaudits, scoring his second to make it 5-3. Late on, the first hat-trick of the new season was scored when the 17 year old Davie netted his third of the night to round off a comfortable margin for his side.
